1. Majlis Perubatan Malaysia/Malaysian Medical Council (MMC), which is responsible for ensuring that medical professionals practising in Malaysia meet certain expected standards, i.e. prospective housemen have all the necessary qualifications to undergo housemanship.
2. Suruhanjaya Perkhidmatan Awam (SPA)/Public Services Commission, which is the governmental body responsible for the recruitment of government servants who include housemen.
3. Kementerian Kesihatan Malaysia (KKM)/Ministry of Health, which is responsible for the employment and postings of healthcare-related government servants who include housemen.
MMC:
1. Before registering with MMC, check if the medical course offered by your university is recognized by MMC according to their List of Recognized Training Teaching Institutions.
- Recently it was announced that all foreign medical graduates will be required to sit for MMC's medical qualifying exam but I guess the details are not finalized yet since nothing of such has been updated on MMC's website to date.
2. To register with MMC, download the Provisional Registration Form from their website, follow its instructions in filling it up, then send it to their office in KL by post or in person at Majlis Perubatan Malaysia, Ground Floor, Block B, Jalan Cenderasari, 50590 KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA. (Their address was changed from Putrajaya to KL since March 2012 as mentioned in their announcement.)
- Remember to have all your documents officially certified according to their Guidelines for Document Verification, and to prepare a RM20 bank draft/money order/postal order (because cash is not accepted).
- If you send your registration by post, you will have to wait 1-2 weeks for their confirmation letter to return by post. If you send your registration in person, they will give you the confirmation letter in about an hour. Bring this confirmation letter with you to the SPA interview (if you have it by then) and when reporting for the Kursus Induksi (required).
SPA:
1. Register with SPA through the SPA8i online form.
2. Wait 3 working days for SPA to process the application, then call SPA to book an appointment for the interview according to the details for Temujanji untuk Temuduga.
- Interviews are held every Tuesday in Putrajaya (for West Malaysians) at Suruhanjaya Perkhidmatan Awam Malaysia, Aras 6-10, Blok C7, Kompleks C, Pusat Pentadbiran Kerajaan Persekutuan, 62520 PUTRAJAYA MALAYSIA.
- Bookings have to be made at least 1 week before the interview whereas online registrations have to be done at least 2 weeks before the interview.
- Remember to wear the correct dressing code according to the Etika Pakaian Temuduga.
- For the interview, remember to bring along the original AND certified copies of your BC, IC, SPM, STPM (if applicable), medical degree, academic transcript and 2 passport-sized photos.
- Another application form will be given to you at 8AM. Fill it up and hand it to your interviewers during the interview.
- After the interview, you can call the person you made the interview appointment with to find out if you passed the interview.
- If you passed the interview, you will be given a Surat Pelantikan from SPA about 1 week later.
KKM:
1. To register with KKM, you have to go to their office in Putrajaya at Kementerian Kesihatan Malaysia, Bahagian Sumber Manusia, Aras 9, Blok E7, Parcel E, Pusat Pentadbiran Kerajaan Persekutuan, 62520 PUTRAJAYA MALAYSIA to fill up the Borang Maklumat Diri.
- Remember to bring along certified copies of your BC, IC, SPM, STPM (if applicable), medical degree, academic transcript and 2 passport-sized photos.
- Remember to have your parents' IC numbers which are required in the form.
- Decide beforehand your 3 hospital choices for housemanship to be filled in the form. This is the list of housemen training hospitals and number of posts approved for each hospital.
- Note that housemanship in a Klang Valley hospital will engender subsequent compulsory service as a medical officer at a hospital outside the Klang Valley.
Summary:
Therefore, I would recommend the following streamlined procedure for the application of housemanship in Malaysia:
At home:
1. Prepare 6 passport-sized photos and 3 certified copies each of your BC, IC, SPM, STPM (if applicable), medical degree and academic transcript for each of the 3 agencies.
2. Register with SPA through the SPA8i online form.
3. Download MMC'S Provisional Registration Form and fill it up.
4. Record your parents' IC numbers and decide beforehand your 3 hospital choices for housemanship.
5. Wait 3 working days for SPA to process the application, then call SPA to book an appointment for the interview.
At MMC in KL:
6. Bring all your prepared documents with you.
7. Go to MMC's office to send in your Provisional Registration Form and obtain their confirmation letter in an hour.
At Putrajaya:
8. Bring all your prepared documents with you.
9. Attend the interview at SPA's office.
10. Go to KKM's office to fill up the Borang Maklumat Diri.
Back at home:
11. After receiving SPA's Surat Pelantikan, call KKM's Bahagian Pengurusan Latihan at 03-88850600 to enquire for the next Kursus Induksi dan Biro Tatanegara to be held.
There you go. I'm writing this because of the hassle I had to go through due to unfamiliarity with the procedure. I hope this will be helpful to all future housemen! Good luck!
Cool, thanks dude!
ReplyDeleteHello Airwolf! Thank you for this, really really helpful. =)

Hi, do u know how long after the SPA interview we will be call for induction...thanks a lot
ReplyDeletePlease help me...
ReplyDeleteWhat bout if overseas student wanna do houseman in malaysia, what is the requirement? Would you pls explain the step by step procedure to undergo?
Thanks..
I think you need to be a Malaysian citizen to do housemanship in Malaysia, unless your spouse is Malaysian or other special conditions I'm not sure. Sometimes JPA send reps to some overseas uni to recruit students and give interviews there, otherwise you will have to come back to complete all these procedures...:)
ReplyDeleteMay I know is it the interview date only on teusdays?
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure, got to check back with them...
ReplyDeleteHi there, i appreciate ur information much, this is so important to me.
ReplyDeleteMy friend told me u were graduated in tw last year, and went back without doing PGY training. I am now a PGY in tpe, but planned to go back to johor and be a HO.
So did u prepare everything after going back to malaysia? or u suggest to do it right now? (my course will be completed in end of july)
i have another question, if my application has been approved, can i start working after november?
The application process is quite long, and you can drag it as long as you want. Even if your application is approved, you have to choose your induction course date and they will give you a few dates to choose. You can choose a much later date if you want to work later.
ReplyDeleteIt's hard to prepare anything by yourself, you have to ask your local doctor friends and colleagues. They use different books and system from Taiwan. But with some hard work most people will adapt, don't worry...
Thanks for your info. Just to add, MMC is no longer in Putrajaya as they have shifted to Jalan Cenderasari, KL http://www.mmc.gov.my/v1/docs/ANNOUNCEMENT.pdf
ReplyDeleteThanks! Blog post updated accordingly! Hopefully prospective housemen can continue to provide further updates for this post!
DeleteHey airwolf, thanks for the blog, just a question, if i am attached with another aspiring houseman, is it possible to be sent to the same hospital as her? is there a way to appeal?
ReplyDeleteHmm...need to appeal with KKM, u may need to call them up and ask how, I have no experience in this...I have friends who appealed to be transferred to be with their spouses and succeeded...good luck!
DeleteHi, do u have to complete ur degree before applying? Can i apply as a final year med student?im planning to start work soon after finishing.
ReplyDeleteI've heard that JPA-sponsored students actually start registering before their graduation, through reps sent to their universities. But otherwise I don't see how you can apply without a valid degree yet (unless your uni can provide a "tentative degree" or MMC/SPA/KKM are willing to make an exception...
Deleteyou are very kind to write this. thanks very much for such a detail explanation of how to go about applying.
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome =)
Deletedo i need to register to kkm at the same time when i register with mmc or can i register to kkm afterwards.. i mean after the spa interview instead?
ReplyDeletecan i register to kkm sabah coz im a sabahan.. or is it compulsory to do it in putrajaya?
You can register with KKM after MMC and the SPA interview, no need to be together, but they won't be able to process it until all 3 are done...I think you should be able to register in Sabah, just check up their website all call them
DeleteHello there, I am a final year dental student and i was wondering, whether this procedure applies for us as well ? I have tried checking online but i cant seem to find the relevant details i need. It would be great if you know how it works for us. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteSorry, I don't have much info on Dentistry but I think the process should be similar. You may have to make a few phone calls to the relevant government departments or ask your seniors. Good luck! :)
DeleteHi! Thanks for all the informations! Just one question, I've a friend who's a Malaysian but been staying in Brunei until he came to Malaysia to study in university. So basically he did not sit for any government exam, but he has a BM paper which he took during his Cambridge O level. So does he need to sit for the July paper? Is SPM BM paper the pre-requisite to do housemanship? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteAs far as I know, SPM BM is not a pre-requisite to doing housemanship in Malaysia, but it will affect one's salary scale and grade promotions. But I would suggest clarification with the relevant authorities.
DeleteThanks a lot dr.Adrian Chua.I go through your HO notes also, its very helpful.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the compliment!
DeleteHi, i got 1 question. After graduated from medical university, do we need to straight doing our housemanship? or it can be withhold and how long it can be?
ReplyDeleteNope, you can apply to do your housemanship later. I have seen people who started their housemanship only 2 years after graduating. I'm not sure though how long it can be withheld, may need to ask them.
DeleteHi admin, thanks a lot for the explanation. How about foreigner who want to apply for housemanship ? Is it possible without the spouse program ?
ReplyDeleteThat I really don't know...
DeleteCan you write a post on the life and problems commonly encountered by housemen in M'sia?
ReplyDeletehi there i got a c5 in biology and all A1 in other subjects and i have graduated from 1 of the MMC recognized uni in russia this summer. i also have a non objection letter from the ministry of higher education to persue medical course in russia year 2006.so will i have any problems in applying for HO later/;???
